CANYONEERING REGULATIONS


 
DAILY SPECIAL USE PERMIT $15.00
 
CANYONEERING (technical hiking/climbing is define as an type of hiking/climbing involving the use of technical equipment (pitons, harness, ropes, etc.) or techniques (rappelling, etc.).
PERMITS
  • Canyoneering requires a Salt River Special Use Permit.  A permit is required for each day of canyoneering and includes one night camping for the evening of the Special Use Permit.

OPEN AREA
  • Canyoneering is restricted to the Lower Salt River Area, defined as the canyon corridor/canyon features of the Lower Salt River and its tributaries downstream from the Salt River Canyon Bridge (Highway 60) to the west boundary of the Reservation except those areas closed by regulations (Salt Banks).

  • CIBECUE CREEK CANYON upstream from the base of the first waterfall (above the Salt River/Cibecue Creek confluence) to the town of Cibecue is open ONLY to guided canyoneering tours available through the Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Division office (928) 338-4385.  This closed area includes the rock faces adjacent to the first waterfall.

REGULATIONS
  • Canyoneering is PROHIBITED on all other parts of the Reservation.  No permanent pitons, bolts, ropes or other climbing devices may be left in the canyoneerng area.
  • All permittees must pack out all trash, campfires ashes and human waste from the Salt River Special Use Area.
  • Commercial Canyoneering operators of guides must be licensed by the White Mountain Apache Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Division.
  • Canyoneering is PROHIBITED on all other parts of the Reservation.
