WHITE WATER RAFTING - PRIVATE
Salt River Canyon ONLY
DAILY PRIVATE RIVER RAFTING PERMIT $15.00
OPEN AND CLOSED AREAS
- River rafting/running is restricted to the Salt River, downstream form the Salt River Canyon Bridge (Highway 60) to the west boundary of the Reservation ONLY. All other Reservation waters are closed to rafting.
- The areas between Salt River Draw and one mile downstream of Rock Canyon, between Salt River and north of the Salt River Canyon rim is closed to all non-tribal-member visitation (except for driving access on Route G1). Salt Banks is CLOSED to all visitation.
RAFTING SEASON
- Salt River is open year long to river rafting/running. Water flows are best during the peak spring runoff period, typically March through May, although optimum rafting conditions will vary from year to year.
PERMITS
- Equipped, non-commercial individuals floating the river who either enter or exit the river from the White Mountain Apache side of the Salt River must have a valid "Private River running Permit". This includes individuals using rafts, kayaks, or boats.
- A Daily Rafting Permit is required for each person for each day they are rafting the White Mountain section of the Salt River All rafting trips going beyond the "HooDoo" camp area (immediately upstream from the now-closed Slat Banks pullout) require a minimum 2-Day rafting permit for each person, regardless of the trip's destination. Rafting trips origination from Gleason Flat require Daily Rafting Permit for each person each day spend on the White Mountain Apache section of the Salt River.
- Clients of licensed river-running outfitters (COMMERCIAL RAFTING) must have individual "Commercial River Running Permits" provided to the from their outfitters.
CAMPING
- Reservation River Rafting Permits include one (1) night of camping in an campground within the OPEN AREA for the date of the River Rafting Permit.
REGULATIONS
- Individuals purchasing a rafting permit must sign a waiver prior to putting into the river. Persons holding multiple-day rafting permits are required to possess fire-pan, trash containers/bag and human waste disposal containers - NO EXCEPTION.
- All persons must pack out all trash, campfire ashes and human waste. It is UNLAWFUL to bury or burn trash!
- River rafting, canoeing or kayaking on any other Reservation water way is absolutely PROHIBITED.
MANDATORY RAFTING EQUIPMENT (Minimum)
The following equipment items are required for each raft/boat as a condition to entering the Salt River for rafting.
- Professional whitewater quality boats (no "rubber duckies", open canoes, etc.).
- Minimum of one(1) Personal Floatation Device for each passenger, together with one(1) spare paddle and one(1) throw rope.
- Fire-pans and personal human-waste disposal containers for those spending the night anywhere along the Salt River (parties holding multiple-day permits). All campfires must be contained within fire-pans and all human-waste (and trash) must be packed out.
