Water Report Recommendations / Tips

A-1 Lake


Try charteuse colored Powerbait or nightcrawlers off the bottom for stocked rainbow trout. Try lures in bright colors like spinners and spoons.

Black River


A Special-Use Permit Is Required. Try nightcrawlers, jigs, and plastic crawdads in pools and deeper riffles near structures. Pack-It-In/Pack-It-Out. Black River Crossing, the Forks and Tick Flats closed due to the Hilltop Fire.

Bog Tank Good

Try nightcrawlers or orange powerbait. Try spinners with silver blades.

Bootleg Lake Fair Try jigs or carolina rigged soft worms for largemouth bass. Try weedless lures in weeds for bass. Try chicken liver or stinkbait for catfish.
Christmas Tree Lake   Call (928) 338-4385 for more information. Limited to 20 anglers per day by reservation.
Cooley Lake Fair Try weedless jigs and soft worms for largemouth bass in weed beds around lake. Try nighcrawlers for channel catfish.
Cyclone Lake   Under our Rent-A-Lake program. Special fees, permits, and reservations required. Call the White Mountain Apache Game & Fish Dept. At (928) 338-4385 for reservation information or email us at outdoors@wmat.us.
Drift Fence Lake Good  Try nightcrawlers, charteuse colored powerbait. Try lures like spinners in bright colors or silver kastmaster spoons. Try wet fly patterns. The Reservation Lake store is closed.

Earl Park Lake

Fair  Try nightcrawlers, turbo powerbait, or salmon eggs for rainbow trout. Try lures like mepps spinners or kastmaster spoons. 

Hawley Lake

Good  Hawley Lake's water level is rising and is near full. Try baits like nightcrawler or rainbow glitter powerbait. Try spinners or silver kastmaster spoons. Boat ramps accessible. The Hawley Lake Store and facilities are open.

Horseshoe Lake

Fair Try nightcrawlers or rainbow powerbait. Try lures like kastmaster spoons or spinners. Boat anglers try nightcrawlers, powerbait. spoons. or flies like nymphs. The Horseshoe Lake Store is closed.
Hurricane Lake   Under our Rent-A-Lake program. Special fees, permits, and reservations required. Call the White Mountain Apache Game & Fish Dept. At (928) 338-4385 or email us at outdoors@wmat.us for more information. Artificial flies and lures only, no treble hooks and no bait allowed.
North Fork Ditch Camp   Ditch Camp is open.
North Fork Lower Log Fair Try nightcrawlers and powerbait in pools and riffles for trout. Try small spinners and spoons.
North Fork Upper Log Fair Try nightcrawlers and powerbait in pools. Try small spinners and jigs in riffles and pools.
Paradise Park   Paradise Park is open.
Pacheta Lake Fair  Pacheta Lake is Catch-n-Release. Artifical lures and flies with single barless hook. Try wet fly ptterns like streamers during the day and try dry patterns during the mornings and evenings.
Reservation Lake Good  Try nightcrawlers or charteuse powerbait. Try lures like spinners, spinner flies or spoons. Try streamer fly patterns. Boat ramp accessible, electric trolling motors only. The store is closed.
Salt River Good A Special-Use Permit Is Required. Try night crawlers and jigs in riffles and pools. Try stink-bait or nightcrawlers for catfish. Pack-It-In/Pack-It-Out. The Forks, Buzzard Hole, and KM Mine closed due to the Hilltop fire.

Shush Be Tou Lake

(Big Bear)

Fair Try nightcrawlers or garlic scented powerbait. Try spoons in silver finish like z-rays and spinners like mepps black fury.

Shush Be Zahze Lake

(Little Bear)

Good Try nightcrawlers, charteuse garlic powerbait, or lures like red and white spoons and bright colored roostertail spinners. Boat ramp accessible.

Sunrise Lake

Fair Try nightcrawlers, rainbow powerbait, or salmon eggs. Try spoons like kastmasters and bright colored spinners. Best in morning before it gets windy. The Sunrise General Store is open.
Streams Fair Try nightcrawlers, spinners, and jigs in slower moving pools and riffles. In lower elevation streams try nightcrawlers, small crankbaits or marabou jigs for smallmouth bass.

Tonto Lake

(Tribal members only)

Fair Try pink colored powerbait, nightcrawlers, or corn. Try spinners and spoon type lures. Boat anglers try kastmasters or flatfish crankbait. 
Information   A valid White Mountain Apache Tribal Permit is required and must be carried at all times when fishing, boating, camping and other recreation activities on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Permits can be obtained at permit vendor locations on and off the reservation. Firework possession and its use is prohibited on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
